Stoves for a working harbour town

Amble grew as a coal port at the mouth of the Coquet, and you can still read that history in its houses. The older streets around Queen Street, High Street and the harbour are mostly two-storey terraces in local sandstone with Welsh slate roofs, many with their original brick or stone chimney stacks still in place. Around them sit later twentieth-century streets and the newer estates built on the south and west sides of town.

That mix matters when you are planning a stove. A stone terrace with a working chimney is a very different job from a modern semi with no flue at all, and both are common here. We start every Amble enquiry by finding out which you have.

Which stove suits your house?

For most terraced and semi-detached homes in Amble, a small to medium stove is the sensible choice. Rooms in older terraces are often compact, and an oversized stove simply runs too hot or gets turned down until it burns dirty. Our guide on choosing the right stove size explains how output is worked out.

  • Wood-burning stoves suit households with a reliable supply of seasoned logs and somewhere dry to store them, which is worth thinking about in a damp coastal climate. See our wood burner installation service.
  • Multi-fuel stoves can burn wood or approved smokeless fuels, which some owners like as a back-up when logs run short.
  • Replacing an old stove or back boiler is common in houses that have had solid fuel for decades. All new stoves sold since 2022 must meet Ecodesign standards, so an upgrade is usually a cleaner, more controllable fire.

Chimneys, liners and twin-wall flues

Older stone terraces

Many Amble terraces still have chimneys, but a century of coal fires can leave flues cracked, oversized or with failing mortar. A stainless steel liner is the usual answer. It gives the stove a sealed, correctly sized flue inside the existing stack, and it helps the fire draw properly. Where terraces share a chimney breast or stack with next door, we check the condition of the shared masonry and the position of neighbouring flues before recommending anything. Read more about relining an existing chimney.

Homes without a chimney

Plenty of post-war and newer homes in and around Amble were built without one. A twin-wall insulated flue can run up through the house or up an outside wall, finishing above the roof line at a height set by Building Regulations.

What the coast means for your installation

Amble faces the North Sea with little shelter, and that affects the parts of a flue system you can see from outside.

  • Wind and downdraught. Strong onshore winds can push smoke back down a flue. Terminal choice and flue height are planned with exposure in mind, and an anti-downdraught cowl may be recommended where the survey shows it is needed.
  • Salt air. External twin-wall sections, cowls and fixings take a beating near the sea. We specify components rated for the conditions and explain how to check them.
  • Damp. Old stone stacks exposed to driving rain can let water in. Flashing, cowls and rain caps are looked at during the survey.

Planning, conservation and smoke control

The historic core of Amble is a conservation area, and the town has a number of listed buildings. If your home is listed, you may need listed building consent for a new flue or for work to the chimney. In the conservation area, an external flue on a visible elevation may need planning permission. We will flag this at survey stage, and it is always worth checking with Northumberland County Council's planning team before work starts.

Smoke control rules vary across Northumberland. Nearby Broomhill, Hadston and Red Row are listed as smoke control areas, while Amble itself does not currently appear on the council's list. Rules can change, so check your address on the council's map. Our explainer on smoke control areas covers what they mean in practice.

How the process works

  1. Enquiry. Tell us about your home and what you want from a stove.
  2. Survey. We look at the room, chimney or flue route, hearth and ventilation.
  3. Recommendation. We suggest a stove and flue setup that fits the house and how you will use it.
  4. Written quote. You get a clear, itemised price. Every home is different, so we do not quote blind.
  5. Installation. Fitting of the liner or flue, hearth, stove and a carbon monoxide alarm, which has been required in England since October 2022 when a new or replacement solid fuel appliance is installed.
  6. Handover and certification. We show you how to light and control the stove. The work is certified through a competent person scheme such as HETAS, or signed off by Building Control.

Stove installation in Amble: your questions answered

Is Amble in a smoke control area?

Amble does not currently appear on Northumberland County Council's list of smoke control areas, although nearby Broomhill, Hadston and Red Row do. Rules can change, so check your exact address on the council's smoke control map before choosing a fuel.

Will a stove flue cope with the wind off the North Sea?

It can, as long as the flue height, terminal and cowl are chosen for an exposed site. We assess how exposed your roof is during the survey and may recommend an anti-downdraught cowl or a particular terminal position.

My terrace shares a chimney stack with next door. Can I still have a stove?

Usually, yes. Shared stacks are common in older Amble terraces. We check the condition of the stack and the layout of the flues, and a stainless steel liner normally keeps your stove's flue sealed and separate.

Do I need permission for a stove in the Amble conservation area?

Fitting a stove inside an existing fireplace does not usually need planning permission, but an external flue on a visible wall might. Listed buildings may need listed building consent. Check with Northumberland County Council's planning team, and we will flag anything we spot at survey.

How much does a stove installation cost in Amble?

Costs depend on the stove, whether you need a liner or a twin-wall flue, and the work needed on the hearth. Our cost guide gives typical, approximate ranges, but every home is different, so the reliable figure is a written quote after a survey.
