What is the best wood to burn?
The best firewood is simply dry firewood. Here is how to spot logs under 20% moisture, what the Ready to Burn label means, how to season…
Prudhoe · Northumberland County Council
Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves for Prudhoe homes, from older terraces with original chimneys to newer estate houses that need a twin-wall flue.
Prudhoe climbs a steep, north-facing hillside on the south bank of the Tyne, around eleven miles west of Newcastle. It grew as a coal mining town, and you can still see that history in the older terraced streets. Since then the town has grown a great deal, with post-war council housing, private estates and plenty of newer family homes built for people who commute along the Tyne Valley.
That mix matters when you are thinking about a stove. Some Prudhoe homes have a chimney waiting to be used again. Many newer ones have no chimney at all. Both can usually have a stove, but the work involved is quite different, so it helps to know which group your house falls into.
Older terraced and semi-detached houses in Prudhoe were generally built with coal fires in mind, and many still have their stacks even if the fireplace has been boarded over. Bringing that chimney back into use usually means:
Shared stacks are common on terraces. Each flue is separate, and the survey confirms which one serves your fireplace. If a neighbour's flue is still in use, it is worth knowing that too. Where a stack has been capped or partly taken down, it may need repair or rebuilding at the top before a liner and cowl can be fitted, and that will be clear in the written quote.
A lot of Prudhoe's newer housing was built without chimneys. That does not rule out a stove. A twin-wall insulated flue can run up an outside wall or straight through the ceiling and roof, finishing at the correct height above the roof. On a modern estate, it may be worth checking your property deeds for any covenant about external alterations. Our guide on fitting a wood burner without a chimney walks through the options.
Well-insulated modern homes often need a smaller stove than people expect. A high output stove in a small, airtight living room can make it uncomfortably hot. Some newer homes may also need a dedicated air supply for the stove, which the survey checks.
Prudhoe is in Northumberland, and it is not among the smoke control areas the county council lists. Its neighbours just across the boundary in Gateshead, such as Crawcrook and Ryton, fall under a different council with its own smoke control areas. If you are near the boundary, check your address on the right council's map. National rules apply everywhere: wet wood cannot be sold in small quantities unless certified Ready to Burn, and house coal is no longer sold for domestic burning. For background, see what smoke control areas are.
Most Prudhoe homes will not need planning permission for a stove installed inside an existing chimney. If your home is listed, or sits in a conservation area, an external flue or changes to the chimney may need consent. Check with Northumberland County Council if in doubt.

More about wood-burning stovesInstallation of multi-fuel stoves that can burn wood or approved smokeless fuel. We check your chimney and hearth, advise on liner grade and fuel choice, explain smoke control area rules, then fit, test and certify the stove to Building Regulations.
More about multi-fuel stovesFlexible stainless steel chimney liners fitted for wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves. We assess your chimney's condition and size, recommend the correct liner grade and diameter, install it with the right fittings and test the flue so your stove can run safely.
More about chimney linersTwin-wall insulated flue systems for homes without a usable chimney. We plan a safe route inside or outside the house, check clearances and planning points, then install the flue and stove, test the system and arrange certification on completion.
More about twin-wall fluesRemoval of an old, damaged or unsuitable stove and installation of a modern replacement. We check the existing liner or flue, hearth and ventilation, recommend a correctly sized Ecodesign stove, then fit, test and certify it as a new installation.
More about stove replacementPreparing fireplaces and hearths so a stove can be installed safely. This can include opening up or reshaping a fireplace, fitting a lintel, building or extending a non-combustible hearth, and protecting nearby walls, all planned around Approved Document J.
More about fireplaces & hearthsYes. A twin-wall insulated flue can run up an outside wall or through the roof, which is how many stoves are fitted in newer homes. It needs to finish at the correct height and distance from windows and roof features. The survey will confirm the best route for your house.
Prudhoe is not among the smoke control areas Northumberland County Council lists. Nearby places across the border in Gateshead, such as Crawcrook and Ryton, are covered by Gateshead Council, which has its own smoke control areas. Always check your address on the relevant council's map.
Not always, but often. Flues built for coal fires tend to be too large for a modern stove and may leak between joints after years of use. A liner gives a sealed, correctly sized flue, and the survey will tell you whether one is recommended.
Usually smaller than people expect, because newer homes are better insulated. A stove that is too powerful for the room is uncomfortable and tends to be run slowly, which is less efficient. Some newer, airtight homes also need a dedicated air supply for the stove.
Yes. In England, a carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in the room when a new or replacement fixed solid fuel appliance is installed. It is included as part of a compliant installation.
