Stoves in Morpeth: start with smoke control

Morpeth is Northumberland's county town, a market town in a loop of the River Wansbeck with a historic centre of shops, chapels and town houses, and a ring of Victorian terraces and later estates around it. Many older homes still have working chimneys, and plenty of newer ones have room for a flue. The detail that matters most for a stove here, though, is not the house. It is the air quality rules.

According to Northumberland County Council's published smoke control data, all of Morpeth town is covered by smoke control areas, made up of three separate orders. Nearby Pegswood is also listed. That does not stop you having a wood burner, but it does change which stove you can buy and what you can burn on it.

What a smoke control area means for you

Under the Clean Air Act, you must not let smoke come from a chimney in a smoke control area unless you are burning an authorised fuel, or using an appliance that has been exempted by Defra for the fuel you put in it. In plain terms:

  • To burn logs, you need a Defra-exempt stove, sometimes described as smoke exempt. Many current wood-burning models are on the exempt list, but not all, and the exemption applies to the specific model and the fuels named for it.
  • On a multi-fuel stove, you can burn authorised smokeless fuels. If you also want to burn wood, the stove itself needs to be exempt.
  • Use the stove as the manufacturer intends. Exemptions often come with conditions, such as not modifying the air controls.

The Environment Act 2021 made it easier for councils in England to enforce these rules by issuing civil penalties for smoke emissions, rather than relying only on prosecution. Choosing an exempt stove at the start is far easier than trying to fix the problem later. Our guide to how smoke control areas work goes into more detail, and we always confirm the model's exemption before fitting.

The council notes that smoke control status for an individual address can be checked on its MyPlace map. If you are on the edge of town, it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Wood or multi-fuel?

Most people in Morpeth who want the look and feel of a log fire go for a Defra-exempt wood burner. A multi-fuel stove gives more flexibility on fuel, but in a smoke control area that flexibility is limited to authorised smokeless fuels unless the appliance is exempt. Our page on multi-fuel stove fitting sets out the differences, and the wood vs multi-fuel guide compares the two side by side.

Whatever you burn, dry fuel matters. In England, wet wood sold in volumes under two cubic metres must carry Ready to Burn certification, and traditional house coal is no longer sold for domestic use. See our notes on choosing and storing firewood.

Morpeth homes and their chimneys

The historic centre

The Morpeth Conservation Area was first designated in 1970 and its boundary was extended in 2021. It takes in the Market Place, Bridge Street, Newgate Street and Oldgate, along with a good number of listed buildings. In a listed building, a liner, a new flue or work to a chimney stack may need listed building consent. In the conservation area, an external flue on a visible elevation may need planning permission. Lining the existing chimney is usually the least intrusive option.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Many terraces around the town have original stacks shared between neighbours. Old flues are often oversized for a modern stove or have worn joints, so a stainless steel liner is the usual answer. We check the stack and the neighbouring flues before recommending anything.

Post-war and modern estates

Some newer houses were built without a chimney. A stove is still possible using an insulated twin-wall flue system, run through the house or up an outside wall.

Installation and regulations

Every installation follows Approved Document J of the Building Regulations, covering the flue, hearth, clearances to combustible materials and air supply. The work is notifiable and is either certified through a competent person scheme such as HETAS, or signed off by Building Control. You will also need a carbon monoxide alarm, which has been required in England since 1 October 2022 when a new or replacement fixed combustion appliance is installed.

Costs and getting a quote

Price depends mainly on the stove, whether it needs to be an exempt model, the condition of the chimney and any hearth work. Our cost guide gives typical ranges, but every home is different, so please ask for a written quote. When you are ready, ask Northcrest Stoves for a free quote and we will arrange a survey.

Stove installation in Morpeth: your questions answered

Is Morpeth a smoke control area?

Northumberland County Council's published data lists all of Morpeth town as smoke control areas, covered by three orders. You can check an individual address on the council's MyPlace map.

Can I burn wood on a stove in Morpeth?

Yes, as long as the stove is Defra-exempt for burning wood and you use it as the manufacturer intends. Otherwise you are limited to authorised smokeless fuels. We confirm the exemption for the exact model before it is fitted.

I already have an older stove in Morpeth. Is it allowed?

It depends on whether that model is exempt and what you burn on it. If it is not exempt, you should only burn authorised smokeless fuels. If you are thinking of replacing it, a modern Ecodesign stove that is also Defra-exempt is usually the simplest route.

My house is in the Morpeth Conservation Area. Will I need permission?

Lining an existing chimney usually involves little visible change. A new external flue on a visible elevation may need planning permission, and listed buildings may need listed building consent. Check with Northumberland County Council's planning team.

Does Pegswood have the same rules as Morpeth?

The council's published data also lists Pegswood as a smoke control area, covered by two orders. The same rules on exempt appliances and authorised fuels apply there.
